Do your practices match your values?
When we talk about creating culture within a company, it’s really easy to jump to talking about perks.
But an office ping pong table or discounts on gym memberships (while nice, yes) don’t necessarily impact how your employees show up to work day-to-day.
According to Larman’s Laws of Organizational Behavior, culture instead follows structure – your organizational systems.
Culture is created through a framework of shared expectations, processes and goals. It’s not just what we believe – but how we achieve as a team.
Therefore, in order to change your culture, you have to start by changing your systems – whether that be team structure or responsibilities, organizational policies or even procedures for granting rewards and promotions.
If one of your company’s core values is inclusivity, for example, but meetings are frequently scheduled at inconvenient times for the working parents on your team – are your actions reflecting your values?
Consider your company’s core values every time you set up new procedures, whether for written communication, onboarding, team meetings, 1:1s, reviews and more.
